What choices do I have for improving my CPU and GPU?
What choices do I have for improving my CPU and GPU?
Hi all!
This is my current system that I built in 2020:
GIGABYTE B550 AORUS PRO AC
AMD Ryzen 7 3rd Gen - RYZEN 7 3700X
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB
GIGABYTE - G27Q - 27" IPS Gaming Monitor
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB 3600 MHz)
Intel 665p Series M.2 2280 1TB
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GA
Fractal Design Meshify C Black
I'm not a huge gamer by any means but when I have time I usually play games like GTAO, HITMAN, Metro or Chernobylite in 1440, nearly max settings limiting frames to my monitor's capability. Currently waiting on STALKER 2 to come out, then GTA VI of course.
I am thinking about upgrading CPU/GPU to have enough juice for the new GTA and STALKER games when they come out. When I don't play, I do some video and audio work + coding.
That said, I am torn between:
AMD Ryzen 7 5700x3d due to price ($150 after tax on AliExpress)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, which I hope will drop in price soon.
As for the GPU, I've been eyeballing
XFX Speedster QICK319 Radeon RX 6750XT CORE
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 7700 XT Gaming OC 12G
Appreciate any help!
If you're not in the mood for an immediate upgrade and can wait a bit, the Nvidia 5000 series release is coming up soon. Even without getting a 5000 series card, the 4000 will likely become cheaper afterward. With GTA 6 still missing a PC announcement and probably not launching until it's been out for a year or more, the 5700XT might help you through until then—especially if gaming isn't your main focus.
Regarding the CPU, the 5900X is the better pick if you don’t play much and really need a 12-core processor. Just remember that AM4 models won’t get new updates soon, so you’ll be stuck with a platform that no longer receives support. The same applies to GPUs; it might make sense to wait if you don’t want to invest in a 7000 or 9000 series AMD chip.
Good ideas here. Regarding the AM4 situation – it won’t be an issue at all. I don’t swap my phone each year when new models appear; that’s just part of the routine. I’ve been considering 5900x or 5950x, and I’m confident they’ll keep me around for about ten years. Looking back at my posts from 2011 shows I was still using the same system until around 2020, okay?
