What causes the abrupt decrease in frames per second during gameplay?
I really need some assistance right now because I'm getting quite frustrated. I own an HP Omen RTX 2070 Max Q, which I've used for more than a year without any issues. But lately, every game I play suddenly drops its frame rate by about 70-80 FPS or more. It usually returns to normal after restarting the game, but it keeps happening around 10 minutes in. The only solution seems to be restarting the game temporarily. My drivers are up to date, and I ran a malware scan using Malwarebytes which found three problematic files that have since been quarantined. I'm not sure what's causing this or how to fix it. Any advice would be really helpful.
I haven't noticed this personally with external drives. I'd expect the game to crash if the drive disconnects. To confirm, the easiest option would be to move the game and test it on the internal drive.
I would use something like MSI Afterburner while playing and keep an eye on CPU temperatures and clock speeds. It's possible the CPU is throttling after a certain period, which could lead to FPS drops. I'd also check your GPU temperatures.
Thanks for the update, buddy. The highest temperature I've noticed is 86 degrees. I checked it right away when the frame rate dropped and it was only 70 degrees. I'm going to follow your suggestion and also look into the CPU performance.
Usually the CPU is the issue, isn't it? Are you using an i7 10750H with your 2070 Max Q? Also keep an eye on CPU usage.
You might be experiencing some throttling issues. The GPU temperature is quite high, which could trigger throttling. The CPU may also be limiting performance. Have you cleaned the laptop or changed the thermal paste recently? If not, disassembling it to clean the fans and reapplying thermal paste might help. Which specific model do you own? I have an Omen 15, and they are quite useful for cleaning and repasting. There should be online guides or teardowns available.
Thank you for your assistance. You're correct, it's due to CPU throttling. I installed afterburner and played a game to observe temperature changes during lower FPS. The CPU temperature rose to 97 degrees Celsius while loading, causing the laptop to freeze. I won't attempt to boot games now until the issue is resolved.
Not too shocked, are both fans spinning?
If you feel sure I’d let it cool down a bit and give it a thorough clean, I’d keep the fans still while applying compressed air. I’ll reapply both the CPU and GPU paste—I usually use Noctua NT-H1 on my laptop. It doesn’t really matter which brand you choose, just make sure it’s a good quality product; avoid anything liquid metal. You can try IPA Alcohol on a kitchen towel to remove the old paste from the heatsink and processor.
If you don’t have the tools to open your laptop, I’ve used this method for years on several models and it works well:

If you don’t already own one, consider getting a cooling pad. It prevents hot air from building up under the laptop during heavy use. A model like this or a Cooler Master option would be ideal:

I’d be careful about generic options—they often have poor quality.
I completely understand your point, and I even used NT-H1 on my lappie. But this isn't really suitable for laptops—it starts to fail after about 2-3 months (depending on how much you use). NT-H2 is a much better option, which is what I'm currently using. No pump out issues.
Thank you for your assistance and the provided product links. I truly value your support.
