What causes my Steam account to show a low download rate and excessive disk activity?
Hello everybody,
I recently installed my new PC and have been facing issues with downloading games from Steam, Origin, etc. The download speeds are around 1.1mbps or lower, and the storage usage is quite high. I've tried everything for Steam—changing the download region, setting limits, using wired and wireless connections—but nothing seems to work.
I also checked both wired and wireless options.
Here are my specs:
- AMD Ryzen 9 5950x, 16 cores
- MSI MagThomahawk Wi-Fi motherboard
- 32GB RAM at 3200MHz
- Corsair 850 PSU
- Hydro cooler (240g)
- 4 SSDs: 2x 1TB, 1x 2TB, 1x 128GB
- RTX 3090 (24GB)
- One external hard drive
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
- Broadband via Virgin Media.
And which ISP plan do you charge for? Cable, DSL, fiber, or something else? Speedtest indicates 7.96mbps is nearly identical to Steam's 1.1MBps. Speedtest.net lists it in megabits while Steam shows it in megaBytes. The ratio stands at 8:1. Small b versus Big B
The download speed from speedtest.net is measured in megabits per second. For Steam, it depends on the connection type—wired or WiFi.

This is on a wired connection

We pay £49 monthly for the 243mbps download speed.

Apparently, everything else is working smoothly on the connection, such as phones and PlayStation 4, so my family isn't facing any issues on their devices and they turn off before I start playing games.
I'm sure there are no outages since it has been confirmed properly.
Ok then...THAT is a major problem.
If you're paying for ~250mbps, and only seeing ~8mbps from speedtest.net, you have a problem.
First, try a different ethernet cable to your router.
And do this with no other systems doing anything.
have you attempted to restart the modem (power off)? have you contacted Virgin to check if there are any issues with your connection, as they can test it on their side?
Edit: Sorry, just noticed your previous post mentioned it works on other devices—probably something is happening on the desktop side.
I’ve searched for a program related to your motherboard and found cFosSpeed from MSI Dragon Center. If you’re using that, please remove it.
