Hey there, I've been a bit out of touch with newer tech trends lately. My current rig is an 8700k processor, 32GB RAM, Z370 Aorus Elite motherboard, and an Intel 2060 Super graphics card running at 850W. For gaming, I play Fortnite, Warzone, Minecraft, and occasionally AAA titles. At work, I do light video/photo editing (may grow more), plus coding—compiling software, data science, and ML/AI projects. I’m thinking about upgrading my GPU soon but aren’t sure if I should tackle the GPU first or start with CPU/RAM improvements. My budget is roughly 1000-1200 CAD. Any advice would be super helpful!

There seems to be a mix-up in components. Your CPU is Intel, but the motherboard is AMD AM4. Your workload likely uses the GPU less for general tasks, though it might be higher for gaming. For performance upgrades, consider what you actually need most.

Apologies for the confusion. Right now, your work tasks rely mostly on CPU power rather than GPU. Adding a higher-end GPU such as a 4070 would likely not be necessary unless you experience significant performance drops.

The i7-8700K can cause performance issues similar to an RTX 4070. Even a 5.1 GHz i7-8086K limits my RX 6800XT to some extent. Since your tasks are mostly CPU-intensive, consider improving one component at a time. Upgrade the CPU, motherboard, or RAM first, then think about the GPU later. Here’s the list I found: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS, and G.Skill Ripjaws S5 memory. The total comes to $943.45, including shipping and taxes. Prices are from reputable retailers. For editing or data work, the 7900X or 7950X with extra cores might help, but they won’t significantly boost gaming performance over the 7800X3D.

The best choice depends on local availability. Since I’m near Microcenter in the US, I can find discounts on older models that would make a solid upgrade. That situation might differ elsewhere. If you spot them on sale, a 12900K or 13700K could be a strong option. The new 14700K is also worth considering. The AMD Ryzen 7000 series performs consistently well. I’ve owned 7700X and 7900X since launch and am satisfied with both. If I could buy today, I’d pick the 7800X3D instead of the 7700X.
