Popular free data recovery tools today are mainly suited for Windows 10/11 and portable use. I remember working with PC Inspector recently, recovering around 98% of data from a failing 160GB hard drive over a week.

You may explore TestDisk, but keep in mind your results might differ.

Recuva is a widely used free data recovery application for Windows 10/11 with a portable format. It’s user-friendly and effective for restoring missing files. An alternative is PhotoRec, an open-source tool capable of recovering various file formats, though it requires more technical knowledge.

I've often heard about Recuva but haven't really used it except for a brief experiment a few years back. If it's still in use, it seems to be effective. Thanks.
