What are the implications of enhancing RAM in a modernized setup?
I've just upgraded my machine for AI. I installed a more powerful psu, an rtx5090, and more memory. I added 64 gb. I had 32gb and hoped to have 96gb if they played nice. Well they didn't play nice after about 5 minutes. It did work for about 5 minutes! I took out the 2x16 I had and now it works fine with the 64gb. Although they are the same make, just different sizes,
I also notice something else. The older ram had an XMP profile to run at 3200. Without it they ran at 2133. The new ram has no XMP profile. It runs at 3200 out the box. Ill post a link to the ram at the end of this post. The new ram arrived in two separate boxes and they work fine together. What are the chances of ordering this again and it all working together for 128gb ram? $500 gamble. The old ram was from 2021. They send out this new ram with each 32gb module in its own separate box. I don't think they're paired. Here's the ram.

Mixing RAM usually doesn't work.
Regardless of configuration, brand, or model...
If it isn't sold as a bundle and comes from the same manufacturer's package...it might not function properly.
^ This.
Execute memory only in matched pairs.
Even with mixed kits, they will fall back to the slower one and remain susceptible to problems.
I’d simply opt for the 2x32GB kit you bought recently and stop further consideration.
What is your motherboard and processor?
If you operate at reduced speeds and higher voltages, it might work.
Ryzen relies a lot on compatible RAM; Intel offers a stronger option.
Try comparing performance with 64GB versus the previous 32GB.
You might not see significant gains from going to 96 or 128GB.
The motherboard is an MSI Z490-A pro, paired with an i9-1050K processor. For me, top speed isn't the main concern. After switching RAM, I believe the BIOS reset to default. My temperatures were a bit higher, and I saw Intel Turbo Boost active. Turning it off brought things back down to normal. I'm not focused on maximizing performance. AI training tends to use a lot of memory, so 64GB is sufficient at best.
I purchased it as a bundle, but it arrived in two separate boxes. It looks like if it was a set, they should have been packaged together. Perhaps I just happened to get the right one? The older and newer versions were from the same manufacturer and brand, yet they were distinct. The new modules lack an XMP profile, which is likely because I didn’t ever configure one on the previous RAM.
I'm conducting some tests to determine its intended use. Currently, it's sufficient, but I'd love to have 96-128gb.
You need to purchase another 64gb kit, matching the exact model number of the one you currently possess.
