Linux Mint Cinnamon stands out as the top choice for newcomers, closely resembling Windows with familiar shortcuts and smooth performance.

Linux enthusiasts often share varied opinions when asked about the top distro. Most prefer Ubuntu-based options like vanilla Ubuntu, Linux Mint, KDE Neon, or Pop_OS!, though each has unique strengths. There are many valid reasons to choose alternatives beyond these popular choices.

Kubuntu or the Ubuntu family offers most edge options and is well understood, making it quite simple for newcomers. For gaming, I recommend Nubuntu—it’s lightweight with Steam included and allows easy upgrades and driver installation. However, I’d choose Kubuntu since it works perfectly for beginners and was my first main daily driver and learning platform. Fun fact: all these different distros are built on top of Debian or Arch. Once you grasp the differences, you’ll see each distro as a carefully crafted package by developers, choosing what fits best on each machine.

You can start from the basics and install Linux yourself. The process involves setting up your hardware, creating a bootable USB, and following the installation steps provided by the Linux distribution.

The optimal distribution depends on your requirements. For laptops, Pop!_OS with GNOME is ideal, while Fedora KDE suits desktop users.

I really don’t believe so. Those with strong expertise typically understand what to apply. Go with Arch or Nixos, since you’re at that level

Pop OS is really broken, and Daddy Mutahar supports that view. I only had problems with it. It definitely isn’t a beginner distribution.

Ubuntu MATE is my preferred choice for setting up a standard Linux desktop. I'm comfortable with GNOME 2.
