several games with engaging narratives similar to Mafia 1 and 2 are available on Steam, especially during sales. The open-world experience adds value. I’ve completed GTA 4, so I’m looking for alternatives. Avoid excessive violence—thanks for the suggestion. How does Payday 2 compare?
Payday 2 initially looks appealing, but it quickly becomes monotonous with minimal incentives. The game’s advancement feels excessively slow; you accumulate large sums, yet most of it disappears into offshore accounts you can’t access. While the progression system appears solid, the payout for each task is minimal—especially after spending hours on a single heist, which leads to frustration. You end up revisiting the same routes repeatedly, feeling unmotivated despite unlocking few items. Spending around six hours feels like wasted effort, and the lack of engaging features makes it feel like a tedious grind. Playing with friends could improve the experience, but overall it remains a long, slow-paced game that doesn’t deliver excitement.
Here are some other titles with engaging narratives and memorable cutscenes:
The Bioshock trilogy is available for 15 dollars on Steam right now, highly suggested. Also, I’m offering a copy of Criterium 2 if you’re curious—just follow the link in my signature.
Sleeping Dogs shares similarities with John Woo and Jackie Chan films from Hong Kong. The Far Cry Collection costs $15 and offers decent storytelling, though it leans toward complex themes—2 feels like Heart of Darkness and 3 resembles Alice in Wonderland, which explains the quotes during loading screens. Spec Ops: The Line lacks an open-world format but delivers a dark narrative. Deus Ex: Human Revolution stands out as well. Bastion and Transistor aren’t open-world yet they provide engaging plots. Dishonored features a pseudo-open-world with a strong revenge/justice theme. The Batman: Arkham series isn’t open-world, but it delivers a compelling story. The Stanley Parable parodies game design and includes an "open-world" concept.
Maxpayne 1,2,3. Top picks are 1 & 2. Bully offers some fun with older GTA titles. SA and vice are my favorites. 3 is acceptable. Sleeping dogs provides an enjoyable experience with a solid story. It can get a bit intense. Saints row 2 brings humor and a decent plot. Pay attention to the gentlemen in the row. Alan Wake (can't comment on American Nightmare) is a solid game with a good story. It leans a bit linear. Far Cry 2 and 3 are worth checking out—they're first-person shooters. Batman Arkham City is another option if you want intense action without killing people. Tomb Raider (reboot) is a good choice. The Mass Effect series (excluding the third game) is worth trying. Have a look first!
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas offers classic charm with a strong modding scene. Tomb Raider stands as a prequel to a beloved series. Mass Effect delivers an ambitious sci-fi saga. L.A. Noire impresses with its storytelling depth. Red Dead Redemption appeals if you enjoy GTA vibes. Arkham City is essential for superhero fans.
