Hi! I was putting off the 5090 due to the heating concerns people mention, but I’m still hoping to purchase one on Black Friday. I’m curious if my system or CPU could become a bottleneck in games like Cyberpunk or Skyrim VR, especially with heavy graphics and AI updates.

I chose the MSI version of the 5090 because it was the cheapest option I found on Amazon. Since I never ordered from Newegg, I’m not sure about the risks since it ships from the U.S. Also, if I ever want to upgrade, what Intel CPU would be suitable? I’d prefer something not too powerful but at least 50% better than my i7 12700. I’m sticking with NVIDIA and Intel mainly because of their compatibility with VR games.

Here are my current specs:
Zotac GAMING Trinity OC GeForce RTX
4080
Intel Core i7-12700KF (prebuilt)
Corsair 5000D AIRFLOW ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair RM1000x
(2021) 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Deepcool CASTLE 240EX A-RGB (prebuilt)
Asus PRIME Z690-P WIFI D4
ATX LGA1700 Motherboard (prebuilt)
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory
Windows 11 Home

I mainly play games on Quest 3, so around 4K resolution is typical, with a max resolution of 3072x3216 when using Virtual Desktop.

If you're considering pairing that RTX 5090 with a 1080p screen, you might want to think about what games would benefit most. What headset are you using? You'd likely get improved gaming performance with an AM5 chipset, but the price of RAM might push you away from either Intel or AMD options.

Quest 3 is mostly built with Skyrim VR modded at the moment. I'm planning to upgrade my GPU because I want to play at a higher resolution than what's currently available, and I need the ability to run all mod settings in High. Cyberpunk with the VR mod also requires more resolution and VRAM for path tracing. For the monitor, I might consider upgrading later, but I don't use it much for gaming, so it doesn't seem urgent right now.

If you want to stick with your existing motherboard, you should consider a 13900k or 14900k model. Make sure it has the most recent BIOS and microcode updates for Intel CPUs, or you risk experiencing performance drops—especially with 13th and 14th generation chips.

You own a 1080P display with a 75Hz refresh rate. The 5090 offers no value in your situation. A 5060 would suffice for that screen. Alternatively, consider the 9070XT or 5070ti and invest the saved funds in a superior monitor.

I should have made it clearer on the post. It should be about gaming on a quest 3, targeting around 4k resolution, with the maximum resolution being 3072x3216, which matches what I'm aiming for with the 5090.
