What advantages would an upgraded PSU bring to you?
Hi everyone,
I recently set up a new system but didn’t have the funds for a fresh power supply. I’m curious about the advantages this would bring and whether it would improve performance or reliability before replacing my existing PSU.
I was thinking about a Corsair RM850 or 850x based on what’s in stock. If you have any other suggestions that might fit my setup better, please let me know.
Here’s a quick overview of my current hardware:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III RGB 360mm
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 6000MHz 2x32GB
Mbd: GIGABYTE X870 Aorus Elite Wifi7 ICE
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3060 - 12GB Gaming
PSU: Corsair CS650M
SSD: 990 PRO 1TB M.2 & 980 PRO 500GB M.2
Fans: 1x NZXT 120mm Rear Fan, 2x 140mm underneath fans and 3x NZXT 120mm models
Case: NZXT H6 Flow
Thanks,
Lewis
You'd feel reassured knowing such a large amount of PC hardware is connected to an outdated PSU, which is quite a risky setup. A decent mid-range PSU from this era shouldn't be part of a new system like this. This wasn't originally a premium product with a decade-long warranty. Considering its age, it's reasonable to expect you might later, after several years, to demand significantly more power than the PSU has ever provided. The CPUs from 2012 or 2014 lacked the advanced boost capabilities found in today's processors unless heavily overclocked.
This review from 2013 mentions the CS650M came with a 3-year warranty. Your PSU might be several years old, yet Corsair hesitated to offer a long warranty. The RM650M offers a 7-year warranty, while the RM850 I discovered on the Corsair website boasts a 10-year warranty. Corsair frequently updates its products, which can make it hard to identify specific models. Changes in design and warranty terms are common, but an RM850 remains a solid mid-range PSU option.
Consider upgrading before the warranty ends. If your unit fails unexpectedly, it could damage your motherboard.
