I rarely play games, but this one stood out as my favorite. I think I first tried it around 2005 when I was a teenager, though I can't remember its name. It felt similar to a chess game but played on a map of a country, divided into many regions. There were rules about moving between areas and taking control, and winning all the regions would win the game. Anyone know what it is? It reminds me of the mobile game "state io" on iOS, but it was different and ran on PC.
Discussing the differences compared to the IOS version could assist in identifying the right option. Consider checking the forum: https://forums.pcgamer.com/forums/retro-gaming.42/
I've noted everything I recall. There were several rivals at once—mostly computers—the only memory is that a country on a map was split into numerous areas for occupation and competition. Not RISK. Yes, it was a 2D strategy game with limited graphics or cartoons. It should be older than RISK (if it's from around the year 2000).
