Weird problem lately with my pc, Any ideas?
Hello, I've been using this forum more often than I'd prefer lately, but here we are. Recently, while gaming, my computer or graphics card would shut down my monitors or disconnect them entirely. For instance, when playing Silent Hill 2 on Steam, after finishing the game and closing it, my monitors would turn off completely, then come back on and display no signal. The only solution is to restart my PC completely. This wasn't a major problem for me as it didn't affect my productivity, but today it happened during a boss fight in Elden Ring, causing all my progress to disappear. It seems to occur only when closing games, which is puzzling since I'm not very comfortable with computers. Could you help me troubleshoot and identify the cause? I can share my PC specifications if needed. Thanks for your assistance!
Since two monitors perform the same task, the problem likely lies with the PC itself rather than the cables. It doesn’t seem like a hardware fault, as such issues usually stop you from using the system. Consider fully removing your graphics card drivers and reinstalling them. If that doesn’t resolve it, search for software that might be interfering with the card and uninstall it to test. Possible candidates include OBS, Moonlight/Sunshine, MSi Afterburner/Riva Tuner, VNC, etc.
If there was a recent update for OBS or a recent graphics driver update, it's possible. There may be software on your PC from the manufacturer that will update the BIOS. If not, check your manual, if you have one, or go to the PC/motherboard manufacturer's website and look for support for your PC/motherboard and then Downloads to find the latest BIOS download. It usually involves putting a file on a USB drive and going into the BIOS/UEFI to flash it.The golden rule is to let it finish - if anything interrupts the process, it's usually very bad. It is a semi-routine thing to do, so don't get too put off. Seeing as it is the video sub-system that is going wrong, however, the BIOS idea is a bit of a long-shot. It's pretty weird that things go wrong when you come out of a game - it's usually the opposite. That's what is making me think it's a software/driver issue. Are the 2 monitors the same brand and model? Can you get hold of another monitor of another brand for 5 min to test it? It occurs to me that if the 2 monitors are identical, we can't rule them out as part of the problem.
they share the same brand (acer) but vary in model, with one being a few years older and another around five months newer. I plan to look into updating my PC or motherboard this weekend, hoping it resolves the problem. I also have fresh cables and a new power supply, so I’m cautiously optimistic it will work out on its own.
