Weird Grounding Issue With GPU and Headphones?
I'm struggling to imagine how this could occur, but occasionally when I put on my headphones, the monitor or GPU will drop out briefly or show strange static. If static accumulates on me, I feel a jolt from the headphones, and my screen goes black instantly when I release them. Anyone know what might be causing this? I might try recording it if possible.
You're correct about this odd problem. It seems like static electricity might be affecting your earphones, and because the audio ground isn't connected to the chassis ground in many setups, you could be introducing a power spike to your motherboard. How can this be fixed? Typically, your headphones should have insulation on all cables. To reach ground, you need a wire that's worn, damaged, or cut somewhere. Adding some insulation might resolve the issue. There are also audio isolation devices available for individual mics or headphones—they're usually affordable but require an extra accessory from your computer. That should help clarify things.
The wires on your headphones are intact, but a tiny metal screw connects the headband to the drivers. It’s unclear exactly how this part might affect your setup, though it could potentially interfere with connections if not handled properly. There’s no immediate risk of damaging your PC unless the screw is misaligned or corroded, which might cause issues over time.
