I've been experiencing problems with my USB ports recently. They function but are slow and deliver low power. I tested all of them the other day, and they consistently give me a 7.5-hour charging time for my Samsung S25. Even the yellow lightning ports on the top of the case work fine. When I upgraded my phone earlier this year, backing up files to my PC was fast initially but then slowed down significantly, sometimes stopping completely before restarting again. I'm not sure what's happening and would appreciate your assistance.

What BIOS version are you using for your motherboard?

The USB 3.2 gen 2 type c is expected to provide the quickest power supply. After that, it would revert to gen 1 and then USB 2.0.

Your file transfers occur because it switches to 5 Gbps mode (Gen 1) and activates Battery charging support in BIOS!

The transfer speeds would vary based on the files being moved and the destination drive. I was moving photos, videos, documents, downloads—everything. Initially, I thought transferring to a 2TB HDD, then switching to NVMe, but it remained slow. With only 128GB of storage at the time, it wouldn't seem like hours would pass for transferring around 100GB?

Even with 5Gbps speeds, one might expect to transfer 100GB in an hour... I carefully reviewed my system settings and couldn't locate any battery charging options! Appreciate the advice!

Check if write caching is active on the storage device. Also, confirm compatibility of the phone with another computer.

I updated my setup in 2024 with the b550, nvme, CPU, GPU, and PSU. Was there a platform change? Did you reinstall the operating system or just move it from the previous system to the new one?

This pattern occurs during file transfers between devices and while checking speeds in Windows File Explorer. It's particularly noticeable when saving files to inexpensive USB3 memory cards and SD cards. These devices can read at a quick 60MB/s, but the average for ongoing writes drops below 10MB/s. This is convenient for skipping higher quality cards.

Initially, file transfers on any storage can appear very fast until the receiving device's buffer becomes full. After that, performance slows or stops entirely as data spills into slower memory. This happens with spinning hard drives and SSDs. When the drive's buffer reaches capacity, speed decreases.

I tend to move data more efficiently when I remove the microSD card from my phone and plug it directly into the PC using a USB3 card reader. My Samsung phone's CPU can become overwhelmed during large transfers.

I've learned to be tolerant and accept slower speeds when moving files between the phone's internal memory and the microSD card in a reader.

Using a standard USB2 Type A port limits current to 500mA. With a standard USB3 Type A port, it rises to 900mA. Excluding special fast-charging ports, most computers don't support them.

When connecting my phone via a regular USB2 port and using the Ampere app, I often see charging currents between 200 and 300mA. That's quite low.

With a proper mains charger, the Ampere app displays much higher currents—around 2,000mA to 3,000mA depending on the charger. Charging from the computer only occurs when I forget the dedicated charger.

I suggest using the Ampere app to compare the performance of different USB sources.
