Weak frame rates in GTA V with an i5 8300h and a GTX 1060 running 6GB RAM.
Hello, I recently purchased my laptop from an eBay seller five days ago at a significantly discounted price. My experience with GTA V isn’t ideal—I’m seeing around 30-40 frames per second, sometimes spiking to 50 FPS, but then the game freezes briefly before returning to normal. Here are the details of my machine: -1920x1080 (Full HD) - Intel Core i5 processor, 8th gen (i5-8300H) - 8GB DDR4 RAM - 1TB HDD, 5400rpm (noticeable slowdown in 2019) - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM I’ve followed the recommended settings from a video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqd81Vt81CA. I’ve adjusted the GPU to "Performance," enabled high performance mode in Windows, installed all updates, and sought help online, but nothing changed much. Many users seem to use more powerful GPUs than this one. I’m hoping someone can offer guidance so I can match the experience of others. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Whitz
The HDD is running very slowly, causing lag, possibly due to texture loading issues. Using the userbenchmark tool will show more details at https://www.userbenchmark.com/
You're considering your HDD's impact on performance. It seems to cause significant drops—like 20, 10, 5 frames—lasting a few seconds before recurring after about a minute. Overall, it's mainly affecting low FPS.
What's the temperature? Are all programs closed when you start gaming? We can verify if the GPU and CPU are functioning properly with the software. Prime95 for CPU and GPUUPI 3.3.3 for GPU
HDD influences speed when loading items since it needs to rotate to access everything. This can cause pauses and delays, though it doesn't impact frame rates.
I recall experiencing HDD-related problems with a heavily modified GTA:SA. On the HDD it was full of missing items and low-resolution textures, while the SSD performed perfectly. When data retrieval from storage isn't fast enough, the GPU struggles to render objects. However, I don’t believe this is the main issue. @whitZ suggests checking the task manager before starting the game—look at the CPU usage histogram in the "Performance" section. Keep the task manager open while playing, and when FPS drops sharply, switch tabs and examine the histogram. It seems you might be consistently pushing 100% CPU usage, which points to a clear bottleneck.
It seems the mod is fetching textures while the game runs on the HDD rather than when the game starts or during the loading screen. The loading screen handles transferring the game world from storage to RAM and VRAM, which are much quicker than SSDs or HDDs.
HDD performance should remain stable while gaming, even with a full disk. Check resource usage via Task Manager to ensure smooth operation.
