There isn’t much reliable data on Intel’s future CPUs. The 1200 socket support timeline isn’t clear, and it seems unlikely to last much beyond now. Since you’re planning to upgrade to an i9-10900K, it’s probably not a big deal for new CPUs like the RTX 3080. DDR5 compatibility with your Z490 is uncertain, but it’s possible depending on future updates.

Regarding the socket, I have no understanding. Using DDR5 on the older Z490 boards isn't feasible—they don't support it even if BIOS enabled it. These chips aren't compatible with the latest DIMMs yet. Future boards from lesser-known Chinese manufacturers might provide updated options.

Intel intends to launch the 11th generation Rocket Lake in the first quarter of this year. It should work with current 400 chipset boards after a BIOS update, and will introduce a new 500 series chipset. This marks the first major Intel desktop CPU to adopt a fresh microarchitecture since Skylake, promising improved instruction performance per clock. It remains built on the 14nm process. Alder Lake, likely slated for the 12th generation, is anticipated for release by year-end. This will probably demand a different motherboard, support for DDR5 memory, and will debut mainstream desktops with both large and small core configurations. This architecture is based on 10nm. Further microarchitecture improvements from Rocket Lake are expected to follow.
