I'm thinking about online experiences with lots of players and huge worlds. The most impressive I've seen is the Dual Universe concept, but it's still uncertain. I also don't like it being a traditional FPS; the fights should be turn-based or something different. Empyrion sounds interesting, though I think it doesn't fully support procedural generation (planets aren't endless). Starmade is cool, but it uses a blocky Minecraft look. I'd prefer realistic gameplay with destructible environments and solid survival mechanics. I really dislike blueprints—they ruin many games—people just create offline builds and run them in PvP servers. Anyone have thoughts?
High quality procedural worlds are still emerging, not overly long yet. An MMO feel is on the horizon, but it won’t arrive anytime soon. Procedurally generated Minecraft is already demanding enough with a few players exploring; scaling it to millions in a richer setting remains a challenge, especially when it comes to data storage.
This presents significant challenges. Storing all the data requires substantial space, and maintaining the dynamic world demands constant processing power. Essentially, it would rely heavily on large server farms. Keeping everything in sync is another hurdle—similar to how destructible environments worked in Battlefield, but clutter wasn’t handled properly. If you accessed the game later, your vision could be obstructed by persistent objects on others' systems unless a graphical setting is involved. Procedural maps would suit games like PUBG well, but not for long-term persistence. It seems the core issue lies in how the game’s rules were structured.
