Since each board computer is built uniquely, a device tree must be created for every unit. This involves updating the mainline Linux kernel and bootloaders. Many single-board computers receive limited or no full support from the standard versions. While devices like Raspberry Pi offer strong vendor backing, their hardware support may end, leaving users with outdated OSes. Raspberry Pi generally struggles with mainstream Linux distributions. Outside of that, expect minimal compatibility for Linux kernels and bootloaders. If you need Raspberry Pi, you must rely on the vendor's kernel. On the other hand, motherboards provide a wide range of bus interfaces that don’t require device trees and promise lasting software assistance. Various CPU architectures benefit from this reliability. ARM, X86, RISC-V and more often support long-term updates. Most single-board computers make installing preferred Linux distributions challenging due to missing images and unclear build instructions for vendor tools. While these devices are visually appealing, their practical value hinges on stable, enduring software support. We admire stylish gadgets, but beauty without dependable functionality doesn’t serve you well.

I wasn’t prepared for such a closed environment, yet I’m hoping for some genuine expression. Being removed from the site for using strong language like “fuck” and “garbage” was really disappointing.

For dollar for dollar, which motherboards match the same design and offer good value alongside a Raspberry Pi 4? Keep in mind that recently the cost of the Pi 4 has risen sharply, but in typical market situations it remained a very affordable option tailored for particular tasks.

Sure, I'll keep it simple. Let's stay clear.

Raspberry Pi's support from vendors has been decent. However, even it shouldn't rely on standard Linux kernel updates. After spending many hours trying to adapt Linux distributions for single-board computers, I realized it would be a costly endeavor. Time and focus are worth more than money. If you're comfortable with non-standard bootloaders and vendor-specific kernels, Raspberry Pi fits your needs. But I chose motherboards instead. Installing any Linux distribution outside of Raspberry Pi could be extremely difficult. I can tolerate Raspberry Pi, but I need at least 16GB RAM for servers and 32GB or more for desktops.

These are ideal for tasks where a regular computer isn't enough. My brother and dad both use a Pi 4 for their home audio setup and haven't had any issues.

The device was created to be simple and straightforward, but it didn’t meet your expectations—does that mean it’s not a good choice for you?

Single board computers can be challenging to manage without using their official OS images. Raspberry Pi simplifies the process, yet other single board options often restrict installing custom Linux distributions. Connecting SSDs or HDDs is usually difficult or complicated. If you're okay with basic use, it might work. However, sticking to motherboards removes concerns about storage, software support, RAM size, and more.

But you do have to worry about physical size and cost. You wouldn't use an Arduino as your desktop, just like you wouldn't use even a QOTOM computer for your internet connected lamp. They're made for different things, and trying to use one in a job for the other is going to cause headaches. Each has its own problems that you need to be aware of, nothing is one-size-fits-all.
