I must admit, this isn't quite a detailed guide, but with better tactics and custom settings, I think I could eventually create one. This game surprised me a lot, and it's now one of my top choices. My main issues were not blocking and dodging properly, and switching arrow types during fights. I've since fixed Block/Parry on one of my mouse thumb buttons to keep my WASD fingers free, and set the Arrow Type key to V.
I'm currently playing Give Me A Balanced Experience, which is essentially the normal mode. I'm aiming to reach at least Give Me A Challenge next, but I'm uncertain about handling Give Me God of War. Yesterday I finally beat my first Valkerie after obtaining and equipping the Deadly Mist version of Ivaldi's legendary armor. I also applied several epic enhancements, but I don't have enough resources to upgrade it yet, so I'll return to Niflheim to gather more materials.
Hey, this game is really engaging and great! I'm still going through it carefully. Have you already finished the whole game?
A few boss/mini-boss battles are quite challenging. The early stages feel a bit frustrating because of the limited abilities and resources when facing sponge enemies. Overall, though, it's a lot of fun and I enjoy managing everything. As I progress and unlock new skills, I think it will become more balanced for me.
Well, like I said, I beat the campaign, but not anywhere near the full game. I had only about 50% completion when the story ended, and I've still only defeated 1 of the 9 Valkyries, and the hardest one, the Valkyrie Queen, is very tough.
As far as some enemies being sponges, are you attacking their weak spots? For instance the Soul Eaters only take damage when their chest opens to shoot fire or frost at you, the open chest being the weak spot. I found even the one in the forest near the cave where you look for Sindri's whetstone is not too hard if you just stand behind a big tree and step to the side of it and do a heavy axe toss, then step back behind it. You can either keep doing that, or grab the parts that fall off it and throw them at it to take it down much quicker.
Another thing that can make some enemies feel like sponges is if you use a weapon that is useless against them. For instance hell type enemies like Hel Walkers, the green ones that are basically zombified Reavers, are best dealt with hand to hand vs the axe. You need to block, or better yet, parry their attacks, then get in some good punches and shield strikes. My video above called The Sickness - Battle at Home, is a prime example of how long it can take if you only use the axe. That was before I knew best how to fight them.
There's a simple core theme here, Hel creatures in this game are from a frozen world, so are very resistant to the frost axe, but they are easily damaged with the fiery chaos blades, and less so, punches, kicks, and shield strikes. However enemies that are fire based, including ones that actually shoot fire, are easily damaged and frozen by the axe.
There's a narrated video guide I'm watching lately by All The Shinies on how to beat it on Give Me God of War, the hardest mode. I learned a ton from him, mainly which weapon attacks and armor enchantments work best, and how to knock enemies off ledges or into water.
Where you position yourself can also make some tough battles a LOT easier. The 2nd dragon I freed had a tough fight with witches and heavy draugrs, but I found if I ran to the far left from where you enter, just to the left of the dragon, they would mostly avoid me while I had Atreus sling arrows at them. Once he had them stunned and weaken pretty good, I finished them off with axe throws, then up close runic attacks. So buy all Atreus' skills, it helps a lot.
There's one thing I really hate about the game though, and I suspect it's due to it originally being made for consoles, and the gamepads they use. That would be their insistence on using ONE single binding that has to be used for both block and in conjunction with 2 other bindings for light and heavy attacks. On keyboard, that binding is Q. I thought I could easily solve the problem and free up my move left finger if I bound it to one of my mouse thumb buttons, but as it turns out, holding that thumb button and L or R mouse button at the same time for light and heavy attacks feels really awkward. It's a shame too, because the mouse button by itself feels fine for blocking or parrying, especially when moving intermittently in between as you often have to, but it's causing me to miss a lot of light and heavy attacks and get hit. It's so annoying in fact that it may very well be a deal breaker for making a walkthrough unless I can find a better solution.
I have a collection of numerous highlight clips ready to display. This includes two of the three Niflheim Realm Tears (a ShadowPlay glitch prevented the capture of the second), all six Muspelheim Trials at Impossible difficulty, and additional Valkyries. Gathering more Mist Echoes and other items at Niflheim completed my Ivaldi's Armor upgrade, while the latest Chaos and Frozen Flames, available in shops, enhanced my weaponry as well.
Completing the Muspelheim Trials returns to Impossible mode once you finish all six on Normal and Hard settings. However, collecting three keys among the first five is required to unlock the sixth on Impossible mode. The sixth Impossible mode round awards Bronze, Silver, and Gold grades based on the number of kills within 8 minutes.
I'm improving in battling Valkyries, though I'm still refining my dodging techniques and understanding their attack sequences. I defeated Gunnr and Eir without relying on a resurrection stone or rage, and possibly achieved similar results with Rota—though she unexpectedly lunged at me with a neck snap when I was down to just a few health points.
I've placed seven of the eight Valkyrie helms on the Council thrones and am holding onto the last one until I finish gathering all the collectibles. This decision comes with uncertainty about whether placing the final one will trigger the Valkyrie Queen boss battle. My stats are at 100% for all four non-Midgard Realms and 96% for Midgard, mainly needing to locate the remaining eight Odin's Ravens.
There are also several Labors to complete, rated bronze, silver, and gold. These involve specific skill usage or combat scenarios, but they don't contribute to the 100% completion requirement.
After reviewing the God of War Ragnarok trailer, it seems to promise an impressive experience as well. It will likely take some time before it becomes available on PC.
Yeah, I think I attacked the weak spots though, but let me check and read the game's CODEX entries as well under the ''Bestiary'' section to find out some description on how to defeat special enemies. It mostly contains basic info and few tips on how to defeat each enemy category, but not much info on the weak spots IMO.
Actually, some of the enemies can very challenging though, at least for my skills, and taste of gameplay. The DARK ELVES for example are highly mobile class of enemy type. Not only can they evade trip attempts and melee attacks but they are also capable of
blocking axe throws
. I had to dodge any projectiles which cannot be easily blocked. Using Atreus’ arrows to distract or even stun them helps though, while Kratos can deal some damage.
I guess dark elves are vulnerable to bare fists, and the Rage Meter attack can come in handy here. The dash attack and charge move attack of dark elves can thankfully be blocked though. I haven't yet encountered the
Dark Elf boss Svartaljofurr
yet. I heard this is a tough battle. BTW, I think having the anti-Dark Elf enchantment might help as well, not just for this boss but other dark elves as well.
Good to see more gameplay videos from you. I will watch them later.
Other enemies besides the Dark Elves also prevent Axe swings and throws. Several shield-type foes from Helheim, especially the green ones, are immune to the frost axe. Therefore, the game seems to require specific weapons and strategies for certain opponents. The main issue with Dark Elves is that advanced ones can fire a rapid barrage of three mines, which can blind you if you're caught in one.
Last night I uncovered a challenge I thought would be difficult, the Valkyrie Queen. She's the only remaining boss for a perfect 100% completion, yet she proves significantly tougher than expected. Her attacks and durability make her at least four times harder to defeat compared to the more challenging lower-level Valkyries. She possesses every attack other Valkyries have, but her unblockable strikes are also extremely fast, making them hard to miss.
After many attempts, I can only manage to reduce her health by about a third with two full Spartan Rage attacks and as many Runic attacks as possible. Still, it's possible I'm rushing the process. Most videos I've watched indicate the fight takes around 8 to 9 minutes. Regardless, I'm feeling exhausted from this challenge and unsure if I'll attempt a walkthrough. I might stick to a main story walkthrough without the optional content.
Thanks for your support with the videos—it really helps. 😉
Absolutely, there are other foes that also prevent Kratos's attacks. I haven't encountered different enemy types yet since I'm playing slowly and carefully. This game really challenges you, especially with my abilities. I almost got hit in some battles, hehe.
Also, can Atreus and Kratos both die in this game, or are they always immortal?
The outcome for Atreus could be quite dire—he might be taken and imprisoned by one of the others. He won't die, but being held means he can't use his arrows anymore, making it crucial to release him as soon as possible if you can. He could also be knocked out, but after getting upgraded properly, he usually recovers quickly. Atreus is an incredible character, and I wouldn't be able to function without him, particularly during the more challenging sections of the game.
I understand that Atreus can recover after being defeated or with Kratos' assistance, but I'm curious about KRATOS himself. Do players really survive all enemy encounters or battles in this God Of War PC game?
