While driving with my laptop in the car, I tried to power it up but it didn’t start. After removing it from the case, the motherboard lit up but displayed a strange error code. I installed different RAM modules in each slot, yet nothing worked. Upon inspecting the back of the motherboard, I noticed a dark, sticky residue on both sides. Could this be a capacitor leak? Is the motherboard still functional? The board I have is an ASUS ROG B450 gaming 2.

It appears to be a thermal pad lubricant.

The white fuzzy patch on the motherboard likely comes from a capacitor. The blue goo on the cooler mount might be thermal paste or residue. It’s unclear exactly where it came from without inspection.

It's clear what occurs when grease becomes dirty. I've noticed this several times on my own computers over the years.

Most modern boards use solid polymer capacitors without any liquid inside. A thermal pad sits between the heatsink and certain chips, containing oils or grease meant to stay non-conductive—this suggests it’s unlikely to harm the board. It can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol or acetone; just avoid acetone if it might damage plastic components. The small PU-printed chips near the drivers act as amplifiers, boosting signals from the VRM controller so power stages switch more quickly. This speeds up operation, making everything run more efficiently and cooler. They may have applied thermal paste over these chips to compensate for their higher placement relative to other components.
