It seems the HDD never had Windows installed on it, but it worked when I installed Windows on an SSD (which was formatted). Could this be an issue? I didn’t notice any problems.

Fixing windows will restore the bootloader and everything is fine.

This works, but you can't start up from that device. You'll have to set up Windows on the SSD during startup.
