Budget (including currency): N/A
Country: US
Programs/workloads: Enhanced network performance, improved file transfer rates
Details: Current setup includes a Plex media server, a Synology NAS, and a rackmount PC running UnraidOS. I’m upgrading from a PC to a rackmount system with 24 bays. I’m considering a switch upgrade for better file sharing speeds between devices. I have a Dell PowerConnect 2848 switch (48 ports, gigabit) and multiple WD Red Pros drives (6TB–20TB). I store games and media in Unraid via SMB, but wonder if switching to a higher-speed switch or adding POE would help. I’m aiming for a cost under $1,000 and want the optimal configuration.

Yes, the games are played over the network. The actual files aren't stored locally; instead, they're accessed remotely, which adds significant latency compared to running them on your own computer.

ISCSI offers advantages compared to SMB when accessing games over a network. It requires significantly lower protocol overhead.

I handle this through Emulation and it functions well. I haven’t actually played PC games via that approach yet, though I’d like to try. My aim is just to clarify. The main point is whether you can link a cable between the two systems using Unraid.

This involves setting up a high-performance network environment. You'd need a 10 GbE infrastructure, which includes a switch and appropriate network cards for each PC. For recommendations, you might want to consider specific models suited for such setups. In Unraid, the iSCSI initiator plugin can help manage storage, but I don’t have direct experience with it. Your question shows thoughtful planning—considering your goal of centralized data storage on a NAS in Unraid is solid. Think carefully about your needs before proceeding.

Most copied titles avoid the costs of PC games. (This one is already loaded in your memory) I’d also avoid trying to play 100+GB games over a network on a PC.
