Hello everyone. I reside in Italy.
I recently upgraded my GPU from RTX 3070 to RTX 5070 (I play at 1080p@144hz).
My current setup includes:
- Intel Core i5-12600K
- Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600MHz PC4-28800 32GB 2x16GB
- MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 Motherboard ATX
- CORSAIR RM850x
- Corsair 4000D Airflow Case ATX Mid-Tower
- Noctua NH-U12S
- Nvidia RTX 5070 TUF
- 3 x 1TB SSD
A frequent suggestion was to flash the BIOS and switch the CPU to an Intel i5-14600K.
Instead, I considered modifying only parts of this configuration to ensure future compatibility, aiming to transform my old build (with RTX 3070 and 16GB RAM) into a new PC for my wife.
I’m reaching out for assistance in creating a build that:
- Supports 1080p@144hz (future-proof for 1440p is also an option, but not yet necessary)
- Retains the RTX 5070
- Keeps the Corsair Vengeance (current RAM prices are high)
- Avoids liquid cooling and RGB components

I created this because there's a lot of posts nowadays asking for upgrade advice both on here and on the CPU forums, and I feel... forums. to help lend us some context into your predicaments, which in turn helps the community chime in with worthwhile suggestions. You don't need an RTX5070 for 1080p gaming, it'll be good for 1440p gaming. Although a popular suggestion, it'll be worthwhile if you went above an i5 otherwise the upgrade will seem like a horizontal upgrade instead of a vertical upgrade path. In a nutshell, I don't see the need upgrade.
Nothing is completely future-proof. It’s better to refresh the bios to current standards. I faced a similar scenario a few years back and upgraded to an I9-14900K without any problems. It was straightforward, and I retained all my installed applications and games. Even a W11 update worked smoothly. Your NH-U12s cooler won’t cut it anymore.

The positive side is that the mounting hardware stays secure. I’m using an NH-D15s, which handles it well.
Purchase a 14900K only from an authorized dealer to receive the 5-year warranty.
If you switch the bios to current settings, the known 13/14th generation problems should be fixed.

I don't understand how important processor speed is to you.
I didn't face any issues with money, so I upgraded to the 14900K.
The 14600k could be a solid upgrade for you.
Based on my experience, I can say that choosing a better product at a higher cost is always better than opting for something cheaper.
I've never felt sorry about spending more for a superior item.
The short-term appeal of the lower price fades quickly.
Thinking again later will be much harder.
