You need to check what Microsoft Live email you used for Windows 8.1. You won’t need the admin password yet, but you’ll likely have to set one up for Windows logon before upgrading. No email details are required at this stage.

You're left with the option of reinstalling Windows 8.1 if you can't remember the email.

I finally realized I had installed Windows 8.1 without an online connection, and it never required a Microsoft Live account—so I didn’t have one recorded. The update had only one problem: it kept saying the system couldn’t install on the reserved partition. I fixed it by reducing the C: partition and then expanding the shrunk space to fill the reserved partition, which was labeled as a data partition and increased to 500MB. Thanks! Hope this assists someone else.
