Vram Issues in Games
Hello! I have recently started having problems with my pc in regards to the performance of windows, and games tanking fps and crashing. It is most noticeable in minecraft where the vram seems to spike up to nearly 100% usage, stay there and tank the fps. I tried modded and vanilla and the problem persists. The 1st and 4th attachments are the hwinfo graphs for vanilla and modded respectively. I then did a FurMark stress test for 20ish minutes and it didnt run into any problems. (2nd and 3rd attachment)I was hoping there is some explanation to why this would be happening in games like MC, but not in a stress test. Could it be a memory leak of sorts? i wasnt able to find anything online. Any and all advice / help is appreciated! edit 1 - after some more testing it seems that i can force it to happen with alt tabbing, a reinstall of minecraft worked for a bit but the issue came back after alt tabbing once. relevant info- 9800x3d PNY 5080 64gb ddr5 6000mhz gigabyte x870-e aourus elite winodws 11 nvidia drivers ver. 591.86 Edited February 6 by Toasty321 updated info
Are you using 2x32GB or 4x16GB RAM? Given the situation in Minecraft, it feels like a memory problem, but if it occurs elsewhere it might point to RAM. Your stress tests focus on the GPU, not the CPU or RAM. Please verify your RAM and CPU health by running memtest or Prime95 to check for errors.
OP is discussing VRAM usage, which pertains to the GPU, not the CPU or RAM. FurMark is built to push stress on the GPU (the chip inside the graphics card), not just the card's VRAM. Minecraft, as a game, mainly uses VRAM to store textures and buffers. Based on your screen and texture settings, it can demand a lot of VRAM. Enhancing textures or lowering draw distance might help. It's also possible a memory leak in Minecraft could cause VRAM usage to rise over time. If you can consistently trigger the issue, reporting it could be useful for developers. ~edit: if it occurs across multiple games, driver compatibility might be the cause. Consider testing with updated or older drivers.
It appears to appear in both modded and vanilla versions of Minecraft. I've adjusted various settings, yet the issue persists consistently. I'm playing at 1440p, which uses more VRAM than 1080p, but the problem remains unusual. Most games seem to settle on a stable setting.
It seems this problem has been observed recently, possibly around two months ago, affecting both vanilla and modded games. It might be linked to a recent game update or GPU driver changes, causing a VRAM memory leak. The issue appears only when playing in Full Screen mode, not in Windowed or Borderless settings.
