VR Suggestions (Games, gadgets, quality of life, etc.)
It's been a bit of a journey for gamers. Recently switched from Rift S to an HTC Vive. While some might not see it as an upgrade, the Rift S hasn't received updates recently, controllers are costly to replace, and finding replacement parts is frustrating. I believe my choice was solid—this setup offers a much better experience compared to what I had with the Oculus Rift CV1 a few years back, plus I got a good deal.
The total came to $150 USD for the headset, controllers, lighthouses, mounts, audio strap, and two tripods. They’re currently available because I’m renting and can’t install them myself. Now that I’m using a more open-featured headset, I’m not limited by hardware restrictions.
I’m curious if anyone has any cool gear they’ve bought or games they recommend. I’m thinking about trying SlimeVR, but it’s not working well—it feels clunky and lacks proper integration. It’s still in development, which is a downside, especially with no interface. I might consider the Vive wireless receiver since it could improve connectivity in my small office space. I haven’t found much info yet, but it sounds promising.
I’m also eyeing the Knuckles controller as an upgrade—it seems reasonably priced. Lastly, I’d love some game suggestions beyond VRChat, racing sims, Beat Saber, OVR Toolkit, and OVR Advanced Settings. Any software recommendations would be great! Thanks for your help, tech friends!
I’m not a seasoned reviewer but based on the Q2 I own, there are no major issues. It handles sideloading well and supports decent VR mods for older titles—just need the originals or Steam library access. HL2 and Doom3 work nicely; Dr beef did a great job. Official accessories are pricey, the 5m cable cost around £90, and you’ll need direct USBC or USB3-USB connectors. Q2 adds a safety zone on the floor and activates low-res camera when you step out from the front. It’s got some clever features—media playback runs smoothly in full screen mode, even for big movies from original DVDs. Jaws performs well. Android version feels like a modern phone for file transfers. Steam VR works okay with the link cable, though the virtual desktop streamer is slow and laggy. I’m planning to try the headset now and see what else it does, while still using this forum from there.
Assetto Corsa works great in VR, though I suggest trying Automobilista 2 for more features and better VR optimization.
Beyond racing mechanics, my top VR experiences revolve around action-packed titles: Pistol Whip stands out as a standout choice—it’s engaging, fun, and lets you enjoy shooting without the pressure of perfect timing. It encourages creativity with patterns like triplets and eights, offering a refreshing break from typical rhythm games. Navigating obstacles and dodging fire is constant, keeping you on your toes. The game also features a variety of mods, daily challenges, and customizable soundtracks that really elevate the experience. It’s a solid 10/10—definitely worth getting.
Contractors VR: Pavlov shines without overwhelming new players or relying too much on kids. It blends realistic gunplay with a more cinematic style, supported by extensive modding and custom maps. The community remains relaxed, making it a great pick for those who enjoy depth without the chaos.
Walkabout Mini Golf delivers impressive value, with regularly updated courses that showcase VR’s potential. You’ll experience unique challenges like ceiling runs and gravity shifts, plus a city map that impresses both visually and mechanically. Multiplayer adds another layer of enjoyment, perfect for relaxing with friends.
VTOL VR offers a flight simulator vibe but avoids steep learning curves. It lets you soar through missions and shoot at targets from BVR positions. The tutorial is solid yet not overwhelming, and the game maintains a polished feel without feeling too casual. Offline and multiplayer options are plentiful.
Ragnarok: You’re the master of your longship crew, with powerful music drawn from the heavy metal scene—think Sabaton. It’s a rhythm game for those who find traditional beats hard to connect with, offering a fresh twist.
Into The Radius immerses you in a bleak survival world filled with missions and eerie creatures. It mimics STALKER but in VR, delivering intense atmosphere and challenging gameplay.
Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 (expected VR version in 2024) offers expansive planet-wide exploration. DCS World spans modern eras (2000-2010s), Cold War (50s-90s), and features fully interactive WWII fighter and bomber cockpits. Experience more simulation than a game. IL2 provides detailed WW1-WW2 aircraft models, while HF8 adds haptic feedback for flight and racing experiences. Peripherals include a joystick/throttle combo for flight and space sims, plus an haptic seat pad for immersive driving or racing simulations.
