I use Nord as my VPN service. When playing COD Warzone, I can pick a city like NYC to connect to, but I consistently end up on servers that are far away—often 700+ miles—resulting in poor performance. It’s the same experience without a VPN. My aim is to always connect to the nearest server possible to minimize lag and improve speed. Please let me know if you need more details.
Avoid using a VPN while gaming if you're aiming to cut down lag. It adds unnecessary steps you don't need. Where your data starts is always with your ISP servers—they're your main connection to the internet. Regardless of the software you're running, the hardware determines the path. Information travels from your PC through your switch/router, then modem, ISP equipment, and potentially more ISP hardware before reaching the internet. If you enable a VPN, an additional hop appears at the end—going from your VPN to the internet.
All information passes through networking gear at your ISP. The VPN only secures the data moving between your device and the VPN server. In reality, the ISP can't inspect any of the packets. You won’t be able to influence ping or lag. The internet is essentially a vast network of interconnected systems. Small ISPs often link to larger ones, while bigger providers like Comcast connect to major backbone companies such as Akagi or Level 3. These backbone firms offer connections across the country or internationally, including to Europe and Asia. The challenge is that you can’t control the routing path your data takes—it’s determined by the network you’re using. A potential problem is congestion at peering points between providers, like Comcast and Level 3. If this occurs, performance drops significantly. It’s difficult to estimate how many networks your data must pass through before reaching gaming servers. Many data centers storing servers may connect to several providers, and some large ISPs might link directly to services like Netflix. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact location or providers used for these servers.
