VPN, onion routing and the Dark Web are technologies used to protect privacy online.
Today marks my final attempt to set up my VPN. Each time I try, my ISP blocks it. At times I need to rely on a VPN to download another preferred one, and this situation is becoming increasingly frustrating. I don’t care about security; just get me access to the site. Why do VPNs claim they can’t provide secure connections? It seems like an excuse for my ISP to block the site and keep interfering. I’m considering using onion routing for my PC. Honestly, I don’t plan to venture into the dark web—I just need to reach my website builder, which my ISP blocks. I’m puzzled about why VPNs are so difficult to access. It’s not illegal here, but why is it so hard? Would switching ISPs or using onion routing help? Anyone else face this issue?
It seems the ISP isn't blocking these sites as I thought. Your browser can't connect securely to them, likely because they don't use modern encryption (like SSLv3). What operating system are you running? Which Chrome version? You might want to test with a Linux USB stick (e.g., Ubuntu) to see if the issue persists. If it continues, it could be your ISP, but since you're in the UK, not China, that might help clarify. Also, check if any firewall or antivirus is interfering.
I don’t have a firewall in place. It functioned before my ISP blocked it, and I’ve tested it on a Raspberry Pi as well. Why does only the VPN site work while everything else fails? (And my website builder too.)
Your internet service provider redirects your web traffic and often sends you to a fake site claiming it’s blocked. The SSL warning in your browser happens because you asked for nordvpn.com, but your ISP replaced it with another site that lacks a valid SSL certificate for nordvpn.com. This triggers security blocking. If you keep going past the block, you’ll notice another message about the site being unavailable. You can bypass this by using a web proxy or switch to public DNS services like Cloudflare or Google to access the sites properly.
I rely on a complimentary VPN service such as ZenMate. I retrieved the download from Google and started using it without any problems so far. I’m not sure what’s causing the issue you’re experiencing. Could you tell me more about the type of VPN and whether it’s free or paid?
What DNS are you connecting to? Consider using cloudflare 1.1.1.1.
Did you turn off your PC or browser after updating the DNS settings? The cache might be holding on. You can also add this to your hosts file: 104.18.229.229 nordvpn.com
