I’m starting this project to boost privacy and block ads across my whole home network. Instead of using separate devices, I want the VPN to cover everything. My initial idea was to place a VPN hardware between my ONT and gateway AP. I found some online guides and even a Raspberry Pi setup tutorial, which seemed possible. I’m curious—have you done something similar? What did you do? How did it go? Were the results satisfactory? If anyone is interested or has a better idea, I’ve attached a simple diagram of my network layout for reference. I welcome any suggestions! Thanks!

Is your router capable of handling a VPN connection? That would be an excellent option.

Keep in mind you trade your privacy with your ISP for the VPN service's protection. The easiest choice might be a router (gateway) that can link to a VPN directly.

VPNs offer very little privacy. It seems like a clever marketing tactic. For your situation, you'd essentially be connecting to your own network from outside, so internal changes remain the same. Regarding blocking features, it's a separate tool. You could install a VPN router like a Raspberry Pi for ad-blocking or use Firefox with UBlock Origin on both desktop and mobile devices for improved performance. It can also be configured as a private VPN for your network.

You're working on a comparable project with OpenWRT. That should be fine as long as you're using the latest version.

It’s not a fun endeavor, just increasing delays on your home network and adding instability. You’ll face more issues with captchas since the “privacy” claim won’t hold up. It serves a purpose, but using it across the entire LAN isn’t advisable right now.

The easiest option is to purchase an AP or router with a built-in VPN/Adblock. However, I tend to favor having the VPN/Adblock limited to individual devices instead of a network-wide setup.

Use a PiHole for complete network blocking. A VPN is only needed when bypassing location restrictions or government/ISP filters. This isn't about privacy.

As stated by @dilpickle just use pihole for add blocking. Don't put your entire network behind a VPN unless you have a very compelling reason to do so.
