I am running programs that I think may be affected with viruses on it. I am running it on a virtual machine, the file saves to an external hard drive to make sure nothing affects my main pc. Is there any chance that the virus could effect my main PC?

A few exceptions apply. It's conceivable it could target additional network equipment, though this seems unlikely given their location within the same network.
