Interesting approach! Since both of you are editors, you can easily exchange resources without needing complex setups. Just keep a few wire connections for smooth collaboration.

I’m just checking out different choices—if it looks good, I’ll go ahead; if not, I’ll upgrade. I figured adding an SSD, RAM, monitor, keyboard, and mouse would cover running the VM with my resources.

You'll require a second GPU for this task. Additionally, you must install Linux and perform extensive software configuration. A separate PC would be more practical in this situation.

It seems the second PC would be significantly simpler and likely unnecessary time would be spent configuring the entire VM Linux setup.

Only KVM and Xen support direct IOMMU PCI passthrough in Linux systems. Windows does not allow this. VMWare ESXi can do it, but only for certain NVIDIA GPUs designed for virtualization on servers. You might consider using soft-emulated graphics cards such as those offered by VMware or Hyper-V Remote-FX. vGPU cannot match a real GPU. EDIT: The sole method to enable PCI passthrough is through KVM or Xen in Linux, Hyper-V RemoteFX works only with limited GPUs, and ESXi’s vGPU feature is the best available.
