Hi there! I just set up VLC on my computer and wanted to know if it can play DVDs in high definition. Thanks for your help!
DVDs in HD are limited to widescreen SD resolution at 720x480. The "HD DVD" format, which enabled up to 1080p video on what is essentially a DVD, has become obsolete. For high-definition content purchased on optical media, Blu-Ray is now the preferred choice.
VLC supports high-definition Blu-Ray playback when your computer includes a Blu-Ray drive.
Support for Blu-Ray is still in development. The main menus aren't fully functional right now, and the playlist selection might not be optimal for playing the whole film. However, it generally functions well.
