Hello! I’m really curious about setting up a game together. My friend and I live next door, and we want to play Minecraft using Java over the internet. But our houses are too far apart, so we can’t connect on the same local network. We don’t want to waste our parents’ money on a game we won’t use. I found something called “Virtual LAN” that might help us. Could you guide me through it? Thanks! :^D

A VLAN divides a physical network into several logical segments that operate within the same main network (for simplicity). It doesn’t provide the expected local network functionality. If budget is a concern, consider port forwarding on your router so one host runs a server while another connects to it. The limitation here is it only functions when both parties are active and the server is running.

Set up a VPN linking your neighbors with your PC. Many video guides are on YouTube. After connecting, it feels like everyone shares the same router.

They're not VLANs, they're mainly for internal networks and used to split a network into separate LANs. A better approach might be running a Minecraft server on one of your PCs, but you'd need to learn how to forward ports. There are plenty of online guides for this. Alternatively, @Master Disaster suggested using a VPN, which could be simpler or more complex depending on your routers.

You may want to search for a VPN service tailored for gaming titles named "Hamachi" https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questio...wifi-netoo

Zero Tier offers a comparable alternative to Hamachi.

VLAN is about splitting an existing LAN into separate networks. Got it Big Grin. I was confused about using it for connecting devices in different locations. Thanks!

I'll go with hamachi. The zero tier is way too complicated for a nine-year-old mind. Thanks!
