I have a dedicated machine with a game server, keeping it isolated from the rest of the network. I’m considering a VLAN setup to secure it. For remote access, I want a VPN solution while keeping RDP exposed only through a VPN tunnel. I’m looking for recommendations on routers that support this functionality and are suitable for such a setup. I’ve also heard about open-source firmware options but need guidance on which ones work well.

Uncertain about your location... in our area Fritz! Router devices handle VLANs indirectly, using port 4 as a guest port that blocks access to the internal network.

Yes, it supports a VPN connection through the single guest port. Also, your location is in the US.

It seems you're facing some challenges with a Fritz! Box and aren't sure about the router choices available in the US. That's understandable. Let me know if you'd like help clarifying your options or troubleshooting further.

This router should manage typical speeds for small businesses, such as edge routers, pfSense, untangle, or SonicWall. For budget options, consider a used desktop running pfSense.
