Virtual Reality connected here!
I've had this 128GB Meta Quest 2 for two and a half years now but I've been trying to use it for PC VR for quite some time now. Here's what I found: Using Quest Link or Steam Link will make my computer overheat and blue screen almost instantly, Using Virtual Desktop works as wanted but everything looks like s**t but to be fair I have all the settings set to default. I want to play wirelessly but I'm starting to think it might be my internet as It's speeds fluctuate. Here's all the software I have on my computer: AMD Adrenaline Edition, fpsVR, Meta Quest Link, OVR Advanced Settings, Steam, Steam Link, Virtual Desktop Streamer, VRChat. I also have Steam Link and Virtual Desktop on my headset. If there's any settings I should turn on or off by default please let me know as well as if you have any recommendations on what of my applications I should use and how, thank you
Adjust your virtual desktop configuration. Control bitrate and quality to match your PC settings. Use Virtual Desktop (available on META store, not Steam), the Virtual Desktop Streamer App for Windows, and SteamVR. Only these tools are needed. Updated March 16, 2025 by TetraSky – made some changes. Inverted meta and steam.
Determine your preferences by checking recommended settings. Connect your headset to your PC using a wired link for better stability. If Steam VR causes overheating and crashes, switching to a wired setup might help.
You'll notice performance drops when playing. Make adjustments while you go. Changes in Virtual Desktop won't change how the game actually runs on your PC. If your computer maintains 90fps but you see artifacts or spikes with the headset, reduce the bitrate slightly. On Windows, keep most settings automatic—codec, runtime, and gamepad emulation. With the headset, go to Settings → Environment quality → Low. Set frame rate to 90, Desktop bitrate to 55 Mbps. For streaming, set VR graphic quality to Medium (adjust based on your PC). Bitrate: 50 Mbps. Always enable sharpening, use advanced options, and increase color vibrancy. My experience with Alyx and similar games worked well at these levels. They may not suit everyone. Experiment and tweak as needed. If you're far from your Wi-Fi router, performance might suffer. Using Wi-Fi 5 and placing the router nearby is strongly advised.
The codec used is H.264+, and the runtime supports OpenXR via VDXR. With a stable 5G connection, you should experience smooth performance despite the distance between your PC and headset. The minor internet issues are likely due to network fluctuations rather than streaming quality.
What are your specifications? If it's overheating and failing, fix it now. That’s a straightforward fix that will also protect your system from further issues.
