Virtual Machine Hosting Solution
Virtual Machine Hosting Solution
Today I had a solid thought. It occurred to me. Since getting my MacBook, there have been certain applications I’d like to run but couldn’t because of the operating system limits. I often considered dual-booting or setting up a virtual machine, though my SSD is already limited. Then I thought about adding a virtual hard drive on an external USB 3.0 drive. But that would mean carrying it with me wherever I go. I needed a method to keep all my files on the machine without relying on the SSD. The Nifty Mini Drive caught my attention. I first encountered this device a couple of months ago. It works with a micro-SD card and converts it into a tiny SD card that fits into your MacBook reader, resting right against the notebook’s edge. My goal is to use a mini drive paired with a 120GB MicroSD card to store my Windows files, enabling me to run a virtual machine anytime. Here are my questions: Is this feasible? Has anyone done it before? Do you have any guides on how to implement this? I plan to use Oracle VirtualBox, as I’m familiar with it. I understand you can choose different setup locations, but will it support mounting an external drive? Thanks! The location of the virtual machine doesn't matter as long as the VM software can handle reading and writing properly. Yes, it's feasible and will function correctly.
Running Windows from an SD card isn't recommended. The read and write speeds depend on the card's type and quality, typically ranging from a few megabytes per second to several megabytes per second, but performance can vary widely.
With those speeds, you could easily handle simple tasks without facing lengthy delays. However, you can't truly know what it would be like until you try it yourself.
It’s going to happen. The cost will be around 200 USD, and perhaps I’ll share a guide on the process. Looks like an exciting opportunity.
