Vintage Optiplex or modern 3300x?
Vintage Optiplex or modern 3300x?
I’m planning to construct a budget gaming computer currently (May 2020), considering the recent increase in hardware costs. I located an affordable Optiplex computer (equipped with an i7-4790 and 16GB of RAM), but these are now considerably more expensive—the lowest price is approximately $300. I’ve already purchased a used GTX 1070 and am considering whether a relatively new Ryzen 3300X build would be a more advantageous choice. I possess an acceptable system costing near $300, excluding an operating system.
I’m not primarily focused on bargain hunting and am concerned that expenses could quickly escalate. My wife has become enthusiastic about Fortnite, leading to frequent frustrated outbursts while using her laptop—therefore, I intend to assemble a respectable system for her. However, I’d prefer to postpone until upcoming product releases later in the year. Are older Optiplexes still reasonably priced, or would a new, lower-cost build be superior?
I already have certain components available: a suitable 600W power supply, a 500GB solid-state drive, and a 250GB NVMe drive.
Opt for the 3300x configuration. You’ll experience improved performance currently and down the line. The 4790 is outdated and limited to DDR3 memory; a Ryzen system will provide significantly greater satisfaction.
