I found the Windows 7 viewer appealing, but the W10 one isn't great. What alternatives do you suggest? I'm looking for free options, mainly for checking camera photos without editing.

It remains part of Windows 10, similar to Internet Explorer 12. Check System/Standard-Apps in the Settings app. It should be the third-to-last option.

I checked online sources and it seems the final release of the W10 has been updated. You might still be using a beta or preview version.
