This project is turning out to be a major disappointment. I expected a game featuring contemporary weapons, advanced optics, attack helicopters, tanks, and similar features. Instead, I received yet another WWII remake. The war has been overused in entertainment for years, and this version feels like a tired rehash. At the very least, if you must revisit WWII, try to move beyond the typical portrayal of Nazis and heroic allies. Battlefield 1 was better than I thought because it handled all sides fairly, at least in multiplayer. Although it added some unnecessary diversity elements and distorted history for its own sake, it didn’t ruin the overall experience. Checking out the BF5 trailer made it seem like a crude video game adaptation of a poorly received film, with cartoonish villains and exaggerated historical figures. The inclusion of historically inaccurate characters—like a British mechanical arm girl, a brave face-painted hero, and a group of hyper-violent, diversity-focused superheroes—was particularly disappointing. It’s hard to believe the developers would go so far as to dress a squad of protestors in Guy Fawkes masks. Everything about this game feels forced and unrealistic. I’m not sure it can turn things around, especially after reading comments from a lead designer who clearly had strong social justice concerns. It’s not just the British mechanical-arm character, which is a major misstep compared to Charlize Theron’s performance in Mad Max; it’s also the exaggerated costumes, the chaotic diversity portrayal, and the overall lack of authenticity. I regret it if it upset anyone, but honesty about what happened matters.
