The hardware registration thread sparked my thoughts. Do you recall when we were frequently asked to register video games back in the 90s, and maybe even with mainstream digital platforms? I remember some options for sending physical mail. What was the goal of this process? I’ve never been asked about it, and I think most people just moved on without thinking.

I don't recall anything like that. It only happened when online games and master servers started, and accounts had to be set up for them.
