Video fails to start and restarts after a few seconds, no crash screen appears.
Hello everyone, this is the first post here, so let’s see if we’re on the right track.
The problem began about two months ago. Every few times a week, my Windows 10 PC experiences full video crashes while playing games, but the video resumes within 20 to 30 seconds. It usually happens when I’m actively playing, not when closing applications. I can’t reproduce the issue consistently—it seems to appear randomly during the game.
At first, my second monitor’s video turns completely gray, followed by a brief artifact on the primary screen, and eventually all video signals disappear on both monitors. Since there isn’t a full system crash, no BSOD appears. However, two specific events always follow this pattern:
When the video signal drops:
- The event ID 0 description from nvlddmkm is missing. It might mean the relevant component isn’t installed or the installation is corrupted. You can reinstall or fix it locally.
- If the issue happened on another machine, the display information must have been saved with the event.
Included details:
- Device: Video3
- Reset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
- Message resource exists but not found in the table
When the video signal recovers:
- The display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and later recovered.
So far, my troubleshooting steps include:
1. Reverting graphics drivers.
2. Removing DDU graphics drivers in safe mode and reinstalling them to the latest version.
3. Running SFC and DISM scans.
4. Performing a MemTest.
5. Reseating the graphics card.
6. Changing Power Management Mode to “Prefer Maximum Performance” via Nvidia Control Panel under 3D settings.
7. Setting Windows Power Plan to “High Performance” (from Balanced).
8. Disabling PCI Express Link State Power Management in Windows Power Settings.
9. Updating chipset drivers.
My graphics card is a GTX 970, which I’ve been using since 2015. Although it’s an older model, I’m not sure it’s the cause yet. Temperatures remain stable with some fan speed adjustments, and the games I play aren’t particularly demanding (mainly WoW and LoL).
I’ve searched extensively and am close to deciding to replace it. I’d appreciate any advice or additional information you can provide.
Thank you!

I'm facing the same problem again and I've tried all the solutions you suggested, but it's still happening. What's worse, my computer is brand new and I haven't really liked it...
Thanks for your response. I'm still experiencing the problem occasionally, but I'm working on understanding it better. Do you use Discord? And is hardware acceleration turned on? You can check it in the Settings menu under "Advanced." I've been using Discord continuously, and I've noticed it sometimes closes automatically when the signal returns to the monitors. Recently, I read that Discord's hardware acceleration can cause issues with NVIDIA cards. I disabled it a few days ago and haven't had the problem since. I'm not sure if this thread will attract many views, but I'll follow up in a couple of weeks if things improve.
Improving late is better than nothing, but here I am a month later with ongoing problems. At first, the Discord update seemed to work and everything ran smoothly for a couple of weeks, but now I'm experiencing 2-3 crashes each day this week, which is much worse than before. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Hey! I understand it's been a year since your last message, but I'm facing the same problem again: grey screen and NVDDMK Resetting TDR error in the event manager. No BSOD or system reboot so far.
I have a similar configuration – 16GB RAM (2x8) and GTX 970 GPU, but with an Intel Core i7 4790K CPU and MSI Z97 PC Mate board. I've tried everything you suggested except DISM Scan, which I plan to do tomorrow. After a long night of Furmark2 (about an hour and 30 minutes passed, nothing happened yet).
I'm starting to suspect something in my hardware is failing.
In case things haven't changed much, I'll still ask out of desperation: Have you resolved this issue?
