VGA indicator on the motherboard with no additional steps. Changed GPU from NVIDIA to AMD.
Hi everyone, here are the system details: CPU is an i5 10400, GPU switched from GTX 1060 3GB to RX 6600 8GB MOBO, PSU changed from a random 500W unit to MSI MAG A550BN, RAM is 16GB 2x8 Corsair vengeance pro RGB 3600MHz. I moved to the new GPU into the same PCIe slot as the old one, connected via HDMI. After installing the latest AMD drivers everything worked fine. I restarted and got a Windows update, reached 100% and experienced a brief black screen lasting about 20 minutes before turning it back on. I noticed occasional CPU-to-DRAM flickering during startup, but no persistent issues. I tried different RAM kits with various setups, replaced the PSU after 8 years, reset CMOS several times, updated BIOS via USB—sometimes it boots and shows post, other times not. When using the second PCIe slot (PCIe X4), everything functions normally without red warning lights. After a full DDU reset, including safe mode, it still didn’t resolve the problem. I suspect the first PCIe slot might be faulty, but I’m unsure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Everything you performed should have caused the PC to start. I’d consider resetting CMOS and reinserting the card.
Installed the 1060 with 3GB of storage. It functions perfectly and is recognized by the BIOS. However, it's unusual since the RX 6600 appears in the second slot instead of the first.
Changed the card out for the old 1060, it functions perfectly and appears in the BIOS. It seems there might be a compatibility problem with the RX 6600 since it only works in the second slot. When I install it again, I’ll perform a CMOS reset, but I’ve done several (5/6) of those resets using the standard procedure: turn off the PC, detach the cable from the PSU, switch off the PSU, press the button for 30 seconds, remove the CMOS battery, wait 30 seconds to a minute, then reinstall.
That's unusual. It was the first time you tried it, so likely a driver problem. As you mentioned, it functioned until you restarted the PC after installing AMD drivers. Used GTX 1060, ran DDU in safe mode (you'll be asked at startup). In DDU options, choose to prevent Windows from downloading drivers from Windows Update. Pick AMD – clean and don't restart (second choice). Then select Nvidia, clean it, and shut down. Remove the GTX 1060 and install the RX 6600. Restart and reinstall AMD drivers.
Thanks a lot—just giving it a try soon while I’m on another task. The main thing is understanding why it works in the second PCIe slot instead of the first. Do they use different drivers? I’m trying to learn this so I can be better prepared for future fixes. Your support has been really helpful!
PC will interpret it as a different device. Placing a random USB gadget like your mouse into a new port will cause Windows to reinstall it, even if the driver is already present. That's why I believe resetting CMOS and removing the card via software could be effective. If the issue persists, you might want to attempt DDU again while using onboard graphics.
You need to adhere to each instruction carefully. Then reset the CMOS before installing the RX 6600 after removing all prior drivers. This ensures Windows can detect the new GPU automatically. Appreciate the help!
