Hi everyone, I'm experiencing some unusual problems with my computer. I'm not entirely sure if it's the hard drive or something else. Here are my details:

Processor: AMD FX™-8350 Eight-Core Processor
Video Card: MSI r9 390x 8g
RAM: 8.1 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (build 10586), 64-bit
PSU: EVGA 850w
Some old CD drive
Hyper 212 evo cpu cooler
MOBO: Asus M5 A99FX PRO R2.0

I've already tried replacing the GPU, motherboard, RAM, upgraded the PSU, and reinstalled Windows. The issues I'm facing are:

- The PC won't wake up from sleep mode and needs a hard reset
- I can't overclock the GPU without drivers crashing or showing bad artifacts (like grey diamonds on screen)
- Even with the OC button in MSI gaming app, performance is still poor compared to similar systems
- The computer runs slowly and takes a long time to boot occasionally

Would anyone else think this might be related to my hard drive? Thanks!

- I can’t overclock the GPU without drivers crashing or showing strange artifacts (like grey diamonds on screen), even when using the OC button in MSI gaming app
- General performance is lower than expected compared to other systems with similar hardware
- The PC takes a long time to start up at times, sometimes showing the Windows login screen

Could you guys help me figure out if it’s my hard drive? Thanks!

I’ll go through some standard questions to narrow things down:
Have you updated your graphics card driver to the latest version released on the 16th?
Do you have the latest 2015 C++ Update 2?
Have you tried opening an elevated command prompt and running the following command:
powercfg /h off
?

If your mouse and keyboard are USB, go to settings → Device Manager → find the mouse dropdown, right-click, select Properties → click Power Management Tab → check the box "Allow this device to wake the computer". Repeat for the keyboard. If it still doesn’t wake the PC, check the Human Interface Devices section in Device Manager and enable "Allow this device to wake the computer" for each USB port. That should resolve the sleep issue.

Regarding performance problems, it could be many factors. Are you comparing yourself to other systems or specific games? Overclocking your GPU can be tricky—drivers may crash due to instability. The cause might be too fast a GPU for your RAM, voltage issues, or even temperature effects. Small adjustments (like 1-2 MHz) can help, but don’t push it further without testing.

Killing the GPU is risky; artifacts are just a sign of trouble ahead. Always monitor temperatures during overclocking.

Startup speed depends on how fast your hard drive reads data. A standard HDD might take longer to boot, especially if it’s old or has lots of data. If your HDD makes a noise when starting up, that could also be a clue.

What type of HDD do you have?

PSU: EVGA 850w
A couple of old CD drives, a Hyper 212 evo cpu cooler, and an MOBO: Asus M5 A99FX PRO R2.0
I’ve also tried changing the GPU, motherboard, RAM, upgraded the PSU, and reinstalled Windows.
Issues I’m experiencing:
- The PC won’t wake from sleep mode (needs a hard reset)
- I can’t overclock the GPU without drivers crashing or showing strange artifacts (like grey diamonds on screen), even slightly
- Overall performance is lower than expected compared to other systems with similar specs
- Startup time is unusually long, sometimes taking too long for no apparent reason (Windows login screen)
Do you think this might be related to my hard drive? Thanks!
I’ll go through some standard questions to help identify the cause.
Have you updated your graphics card drivers to the latest version released on the 16th?

Regarding the performance drop, it could be due to various factors. Are you comparing with specific games or benchmarks like 3DMark?
Overclocking the GPU can be tricky. Drivers may crash because the overclock is unstable. The cause might be unclear without testing and detailed data. Each system behaves differently—possibly your GPU is too fast for the memory, or vice versa, or voltage levels are off. Small adjustments (like 1-2 MHz) matter. Reducing power by half a percent isn’t harmful, but avoid further overclocking until you understand it better. High temperatures also affect overclocking.
Windows startup speed depends on how quickly your hard drive reads data. A slow HDD can cause delays based on data size, capacity, and age. HDDs spin at 5000–15000 RPMs; eventually they fail due to wear. I usually recommend switching to an SSD for faster performance.
Does your HDD make a faint noise when starting up?
What model do you have?
Thanks for the help! You’ve fixed my sleep issue—great job! I had the latest drivers and 2015 C++. For GPU comparisons, I use Vally and 3Dmark, but both gave poor results. Others with similar setups reported lower FPS than mine.
OC attempts: I researched and followed a guide, adjusting core clock, RAM, and power voltage. But since I’m new, I stuck to the default settings from my GPU drivers. Surprisingly, my card couldn’t perform as advertised. I’m also unsure about the HDD brand, but it’s 7200 RPM—probably time to switch to an SSD for better speed.
Appreciate your response!

Dietrich shares his experience with some unusual computer issues. He suspects the problem might be related to the hard drive, though he isn't certain. He provides detailed specifications of his system, including the processor, graphics card, RAM, operating system, power supply, and other components. He also mentions trying various fixes such as replacing the GPU, motherboard, RAM, upgrading the PSU, and reinstalling Windows. He lists several symptoms like difficulty waking from sleep, GPU overclocking issues, slow startup times, and performance drops compared to similar systems. Dietrich suggests checking the hard drive status using Device Manager and recommends reading more about GPU overclocking before attempting further adjustments. He also asks for advice on whether his system's performance is affected by the type of games or benchmarks used.
