Very slow uploads but quick downloads – A Puzzle of Connection
Very slow uploads but quick downloads – A Puzzle of Connection
Hello everyone. I'm trying a fresh internet service from Nomad Internet using T-Mobile's network. The speeds are quite low—around 600 Kbps for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads. What's puzzling is that speedtest.com reports 20-30 Mbps for both, while testmy.net gives wildly different numbers. This inconsistency is obvious when browsing popular sites. I haven't received any updates from Nomad yet, so I've been trying various troubleshooting steps: factory reset, changed DNS to Google, even tried blowing on the SIM slot. It seems I've exhausted all options. The problem appears consistent across all my devices, both wired and wireless. I'm not engaging in any suspicious activity—no torrenting or piracy. Just trying to figure out what's going on. Any suggestions?
This site seems inconsistent due to the discrepancy between my reported speed and the results from Speedtest.net, which matches my plan. I can achieve download speeds around 50 Mbps, which translates to about 6.25 MB/s. However, my actual performance varies—around 300 KB/s for downloads in Chrome, dropping to roughly 5 MB/s when using IDM. The difference may be caused by where the files are being downloaded from or network congestion. Personally, I switched back to Chrome because Edge doesn’t offer comparable speeds.
I’m confident in the results because I’m comparing them with my own DSL connection. All speeds from the sites I’ve tested match consistently. Even when downloading files across different browsers or using Steam, the numbers hold up. The only oddity I noticed was with Ookla speed tests, especially for Nomad’s 4G service—though Ookla is accurate for my DSL setup. I’m wondering if Nomad or T-Mobile might be intentionally slowing me down or if there’s a DNS problem. I’d appreciate any advice on confirming this or trying alternative methods.
ISPs have full visibility into your browsing activity and service usage. It’s possible they’re limiting download speeds for certain applications or websites. Consider switching to the fastest DNS provider available. They even offer a built-in VPN service (based in the USA, likely), though you can choose between DNS-only or DNS with Warp. They claim to maintain privacy, which they do. The main drawback is slower connection speeds due to geographic restrictions—especially for users in Asia. There’s no trade-off on performance. You might want to try one or both options. https://1.1.1.1/ (Recommended for all platforms) But right now I rely solely on DNS because of latency issues. Warp is essentially a VPN with a fixed location.
Don't need to modify your router settings. Simply install the app for any device you own and execute it using just DNS, then run it with both DNS and WARP enabled. I tested this on my PC—ping remains high during warp while speed stays unchanged. Using their DNS showed a clear improvement on my end, though I don’t know what others think.
I reset the router's DNS configuration to its standard setting and tested using only the app. The same outcomes occurred. My ping remains unaffected. It seems the problem isn't related to DNS.
