I've just assembled a budget build using a Ryzen 5 5600G with integrated Vega graphics and no dedicated card planned for now. Most sites don't specify the exact GPU type, often just mentioning Radeon Graphics. This was my first project, so I felt confused by benchmarks, compatibility checks, tests, and config choices. I realized the 5600G uses Vega 7 while the 5700G uses Vega 8. I started questioning my decision and wanted to understand the differences. My main questions are: - Why does AMD use such varied naming for integrated graphics? Is there a pattern like Vega 11? - Are these called Radeon Rx Vega or is that another series? I've seen many combinations. - What's the key distinction between these generations? If it only matters performance, is that noticeable? - What do the numbers like Vega 7 or Vega 8 represent? Are they similar to i3 or B550 specs? - How do these integrated GPUs compare to mobile options such as the 4500U APU, even with the same name? I tried to sort this out mentally, but interest in these APUs is limited, so details are sparse. Thanks!
Vega 11 has its own unique characteristics. It uses higher g-forces and advanced graphics compared to previous models, featuring 11 compute units while the Vega 7 on the 5600G has 7. Older Vega 11 versions in older APUs run slower and miss some performance tweaks, which usually makes the newer 5600G iGPU outperform it. Radeon RX Vega is often compared to the Vega 56 and Vega 64, AMD’s graphics cards from 2017 that offer larger versions of the built-in Vega technology. The numbers like 7, 8, or 11 refer to the count of compute units in the iGPU, not generations. It's not just about model numbers; it's about how many processing cores are available. If you're comparing the 3400G and 5600G directly, yes—there have been noticeable improvements in iGPU performance between Vega 11 and Vega 7, making the latter generally faster in most games. Additionally, mobile GPUs may run at different speeds because of power constraints on portable devices.
That's an interesting observation. AMD also did that with the FX CPUs: the lead number was the core count. So the 6300 was actually newer than the 8150, but had 6 cores instead of 8. And yet, it also shows that the number is meaningless for consumers, because the Vega 7 in the 5600G usually outdoes the Vega 11 in the 3400G. Maybe all GPUs should be named based on the 3D Mark Fire Strike score or something? But that would present its own issues...
In 2017 I hoped AMD had adopted the Ryzen naming system—Ryzen 4, 6, and 8—to align with core counts and playfully outdo Intel’s Core lineup. Instead, they followed a rigid 3/5/7 pattern simply because they believed that was what consumers interpreted, as though it carried meaning.
