I understand your concern, but wearing headphones alone won't block all noise.

I haven’t tried it before and I’m not sure what to expect. It could work, but the wire might wear out eventually. In case of failure, a budget PSU might be a better option. Modern PSUs are durable enough, yet good ones cost a lot, making repairs worthwhile despite the hassle. I don’t know how long it will last without one. Ideally, I’d save around $80 for a solid PSU. PSUs are mainly about reliable power, not flashy features—stable output and safety functions help prevent damage if it fails. The best approach is to swap them out before they stop working completely. Warranties are important; using a unit past its warranty increases the risk of trouble. If the store won’t accept it, you might still get an RMA. If not, replace it quickly. Edited December 21, 2022 by Bombastinator

I discovered that during high usage, the sounds get softer and occasionally cease completely. They tend to begin when the computer isn’t running for a while.

A running computer experiences increased fan speed and stronger airflow when under stress. Idle conditions might lead to this behavior when the cable shifts position.

I'll opt for a quality power supply instead of another inexpensive one.
