Chose to set up an OPNSENE unit with a budget motherboard featuring a V-M.2 port. Planned to use a discrete graphics card but only had one PCIe slot, intending to add a 4x gigabit card later. Checked if the single PCIe slot on the V-M.2 could accommodate a NIC chip in the V-M.2 (e-key) or if an APU would be necessary.

The M.2 Wi-Fi port is actually more compact compared to a PCIe x1 connection.

It’s likely to consume a lot of CPU and power for an OPNsense setup. A device built around laptop components tends to use less energy than a simple GPU running continuously. This unit handles gigabit speeds effortlessly.

Feedback accepted. I’ll opt for a lower-spec APU, review its power draw, and look into more eco-friendly options if needed.
