Hey, I was planning to purchase Bioshock 1 but saw that message on the Steam page right away. It really made me lose interest. Now I need to download it another way. I’ve heard you can receive it as a gift from people in the US and get the genuine version. But that usually involves trust, paying back, and could lead to some tricky situations. I was wondering if Hotspot Shield is an option. Could I log in from the US and then buy the game on Steam for my account here in Germany?
I'm also a German player facing the same situation. You have a few choices here. You can either: Have someone from outside Germany send you the full version of the game. Purchase a key from a reliable seller and install it on Steam. This might even help you save money, though only a handful of games are fully uncensored and won't allow German IP addresses to play them. Bioshock shouldn't be one of those. Using VPNs or circumventing their regional restrictions via a proxy is unfortunately against their terms of service and could lead to your account being banned.
Laws in Germany can be tricky, even for rated games. Good news—Austria handles things differently, and the version here is fully uncut. A UK or Austrian key should work without issues, though regional locks or banned symbols might still block play (like Wolfenstein with swastikas). Using a VPN isn’t recommended because it could lead to permanent account bans. It’s not worth the risk.
This statement is meant to avoid offending anyone, I won't be held accountable for causing distress or anger.
You recently reviewed the details again—activating an international key for Wolfenstein in Germany isn’t possible because it’s region-locked. They made exceptions for Austria and Switzerland, allowing you to play the full version with the Swastikas included. Mostly, only the Swastikas were altered; the rest of the game remains unchanged, so it’s not a major issue.
