Hey everyone, I have a question about my parents being foster carers and having kids in care. We suspect one of them might be using Snapchat, but they’ve told us it’s inappropriate. They want to confirm before taking any action, even though they deny having an account. I’m trying to find out if there’s a way to check which apps are running on our devices through the home network. I downloaded Fing, but I can’t see how to use it for this purpose. Thanks for your help! BisquTz
Varies by router model; some support logging features for parental controls, though privacy remains a concern. Likely the safest path is adjusting router/modem settings to block specific words (like Snapchat) and then using a VPN such as PIA or Opera VPN for secure access. A free option could be Opera VPN, but it won’t fully prevent detection if the device is monitored. Alternatively, consider more invasive measures like installing surveillance tools, especially if you have direct access to the child’s device.
I believe some individuals here could assist you better than me, but I suggest checking the traffic between the router and device to spot sources. This might be challenging since it could be encrypted or hosted somewhere like Google Cloud for services such as Snapchat. With my setup, I employ deep packet inspection, yet Snapchat still doesn't show up there.
I suggest using the Disney Circle solution. You can track app usage (like Snapchat) and control access or set time limits. I purchased a Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 router with built-in Disney Circle, but there are also other devices from Disney and different manufacturers. See: https://meetcircle.com/
