I set up a genuine Windows 7 Pro 64-bit copy on a brand-new PC last night from a CD. The installation completed smoothly and activated without problems. I installed the motherboard drivers and enabled internet access to update Windows. When I tried to update, it would display "searching for updates" with the blue progress bar moving. I waited two hours and returned, but nothing changed. I re-installed Windows 7 and repeated the process, still encountering the same issue. Eventually, I bought a Windows 8.1 Pro key online and installed it. The update worked immediately. The Windows update service seems to have been down yesterday. Anyone know if there was an outage?

It happened to me too when I first upgraded to Windows 10—it had to check the computer, which felt like waiting.

Was nie mit dem Aktualisieren einer neuen Maschine zu tun gehabt. Nach der Aktivierung liefen die Updates sofort gut.

Do you require the icon in the taskbar for the free upgrade to Windows 10? I’m trying to install Windows 10 on this machine using the free upgrade from Windows 7/8, but I don’t have the upgrade icon there. Since my Windows 8.1 is already activated, can I proceed now or must I wait for that taskbar button? I also want to know if I need to run Windows Update first before upgrading.

I’m a technician handling many new installations. I found an old problem about two months back. You can remove everything in C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download, reboot, and then run Windows updates again. It helped a few times. Using ccleaner and running "cleaner" plus "registry" also worked.

I headed back home for lunch. I started the PC just to check the Windows Update status. As soon as it launched, I didn’t even notice the update icon, but it was already installing Windows 10! I ended up leaving it running and then returned to my tasks.
